     The Wastewater Department is responsible for collecting and cleaning the 4 million gallons per day of wastewater generated by our customers to meet the water quality standards established by the EPA. The City’s line maintenance crew is responsible for maintaining the City’s sewer collection system. Some of the important work they perform includes cleaning, troubleshooting, repairing, and unclogging the lines, lift stations, and catch basins in the City’s collection system. Once collected, the water in the system is conveyed to the City’s wastewater treatment plant for cleaning before being put back into the Ohio River.
     The City’s wastewater treatment plant, located at 100 North Water St. in Steubenville, Ohio, is an activated sludge plant with a design average daily flow of 6 million gallons per day (MGD) with an actual average dry weather flow of 4MGD. The plant is capable of treating up to 36MGD with all flows up to 13.5MGD receiving both primary and secondary treatment and flows from 13.5MGD up to 36MGD receiving primary treatment only.
    The wastewater treatment plant personnel are responsible for the important 24 hour per day 365 days per year task of meeting water quality standards by maintaining, monitoring, troubleshooting, and repairing plant equipment and processes.

    Chuck Murphy is a Mingo High School graduate, a United States Air Force Veteran, holds an Ohio class III operator’s license, and is an active member of the Ohio Water Environment Association. As Assistant Superintendent, Chuck Murphy is head of the Wastewater Department and is responsible for overseeing the City’s wastewater treatment plant and collection system. Mr. Murphy currently is pursuing his Class IV license.
