The Water Department is a branch of Public Works responsible for providing potable water to the residents of Steubenville and parts of northern Jefferson County. Water is pumped from the Ohio River at the Alikanna Pump Station to a 6 million gallon reservoir at the Filtration Plant located on University Blvd. The Filtration Plant is a new Superpulsator facility commissioned in August 2007 and is the only one of its kind in the State of Ohio at this time. The new plant produces an average of 5 million gallons a day of potable water. Bob Ribar heads a team of 18 employees consisting of operators, maintenance personnel and meter repair employees. All of the operators are licensed; that hold either a Class I, II or III Ohio EPA Water Supply License. The Water Department is responsible for repairing water main breaks, but not service lines.
